Here is what Famagusta looked like in 1995, seen from across the green line in Dherynia. At that time it had not been inhabited in twenty-one years.



During the 1960s, in the decade after independence, it was the centre of the tourist industry. The hotels are long abandoned and the sandy beaches--some of the best in the island--are bereft of sunbathers. However, if the current momentum is maintained, this may change in the not too distant future.
