What are the implications of all this for
Canadians? Although our two countries have been good neighbours for
nearly two centuries, changes in administrations have sometimes led to
tensions. John Diefenbaker and John Kennedy endured a somewhat prickly
relationship, as did Pierre Trudeau and Richard Nixon. With Trump
governing the United States, it is safe to assume that we are in for a
rocky ride for the foreseeable future. The U.S. is highly unlikely to
give Canada the benefit of the doubt when and if disputes arise between
us. The two major issues likely to divide us are trade and defence.

The easy way out of the Trump presidency reality is to keep harping on his character flaws. I agree, if he would have wanted to be the suitor of a family member, it would be over my strenuous objection. However, he was not. Instead, he put his case the the American public which deemed him a very suitable candidate to take on the so-called 'deep state' establishment, despite his many character flaws, and perhaps because of one obvious character strength many may have blindly missed: perseverance in the face of adversity and relentless lawfare.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a Trump presidency will rattle many heads of government and the busy bodies at the UN and its agencies. In fact, that may be a good thing as the UN suffers greatly from 'mission creep' and has not served its original purpose for a long time. The same can be said of NATO. It seems to exist for its sake while few of its member nations pony up the share they promised to pay. Of course, they rather not deal with the likes of President Trump. Far from weakening NATO, in my opinion, he strengthened it by insisting on every member-nation shoulder its share. You seem scared of Trump's bluster, but instead look at the end-game outcome.
One more thing, the most important aspect to remember in all of the political wrangling and jockeying is that our government leaders seem to have forgotten that there is a God who is sovereign over all and that is He to whom they are answerable, President Trump and his affiliates included.
