One of the more interesting features of Cyprus is that it has experienced a variety of cultural influences, including Byzantine, mediaeval western and Islamic. Here is a typical example, the St. Nicholas Cathedral, built during the Frankish and Venetian eras in the fourteenth century. After the Ottoman conquest in 1571, it became a mosque, complete with minaret.



This is located in the old walled city of Famagusta, which up to now has been inaccessible from the south.
