DECEMBER 2023 NEWSLETTER

As we close out the calendar year, please consider making a financial contribution to the work I undertake with Global Scholars Canada, a registered charity with the CRA. Your contributions help to support the following:

  1. I draw a small monthly salary from these funds to supplement my private and public pension income, and together they cover a portion of the time and effort put into the various responsibilities I have assumed, which include research, writing, mentoring, lecturing, and interviews.
  2. The funds cover equipment, supplies, books, and other incidental expenses incurred in my work. The computer on which I work and the connected printer are two of the major pieces of equipment provided by your generous contributions.
  3. With the easing of the pandemic, I have resumed some work-related travel, most recently to western Pennsylvania to speak at two educational institutions. Your contributions will help to support this travel, especially where resources in the host country are insufficient to cover the costs.

GSC's page for giving can be found here. Once you are in the page, scroll down to the heading marked DONATION DETAILS, and then choose one of the options under FUND. Americans may donate through our sister organization in the US, a registered charity in that country.

Canadian donors can donate publicly traded securities (shares or mutual funds) directly to charities without having to pay the capital gains tax. This is a cost-effective and painless way to make a donation that comes with a substantial tax incentive. By donating securities, donors pay no tax on capital gains, receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities, as well as reduce their taxes. Watch this video for more information about this option: Link Charity Canada: Donation of Securities. If interested, please visit the Link Charity Canada Inc. website, and call for details at 1-800-387-8146. Link Charity Canada is a partner organization of Global Scholars Canada, so Link Charity can easily direct funds for my work.

The big news this month is that InterVarsity Press has now given me its editor's report for my next book, and I am now making revisions due back to the publisher by the middle of next month. A date is now set for the book's publication: November 2024! That's just eleven months away. Although the working title is still "Citizenship Without Illusions," we'll see whether IVP decides to run with that or to opt for something different.

Last month many of us were surprised to learn that Somali-born Ayan Hirsi Ali had converted to Christianity after growing up a Muslim and, more recently, professing atheism. She was an immigrant to the Netherlands and served in the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. Now she is in the United States and wrote to explain her conversion. I thought this development warranted a response, which I posted here: Why Ayan Hirsi Ali is now a Christian.

I've also taken another crack at parental rights, a notion that seems to puzzle the mainstream media. Reformed Christians have been in the forefront of efforts to ensure that their children and youth are educated within the context of a Christian worldview, and I strongly support such efforts.

I have had a few interviews on subjects related to my books. On the first of the month, I was interviewed for the Disarming Leviathan podcast, hosted by Caleb Campbell, who will be publishing a book with that title next year, also with IVP. The interview was about political ideologies, but especially nationalism, the subject of his forthcoming book. When the podcast is posted, I will link to it from my blog.

Next, I was interviewed for a second time by Aeric Estep and Scott Reavely for their City on a Hill podcast. The first interview took place early last year on political ideologies as the final instalment of a series on the chapters of Political Visions and Illusions. This time the conversation was on my second book, We Answer to Another: Authority, Office, and the Image of God. The interview was posted earlier this week and can be found here. I expect to be interviewed by Estep and Reavely sometime after the publication of my next book.

Then, last week I conversed remotely with staff members of ARPA Canada about my first book, at the invitation of Daniel Zekveld, a staff member who was one of my students during my last two years of teaching.

Finally, today I spoke in person to a class of grade 11 and 12 students at Guido de Bres Christian High School here in Hamilton about the ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza. This is the first time I've addressed a high school class, and I enjoyed it immensely. The students asked good and probing questions.

May the Lord whom we worship in common bless you during this Advent season and into Christmas and beyond. And please remember my work in your prayers. Thank you so much!

Yours in God's service,

David Koyzis, Global Scholar
