JULY 2024 NEWSLETTER

Nancy and I have just returned from a holiday in Port Elgin and Southampton, Ontario, on the eastern shores of Lake Huron. We spent time at two beaches, but generally when we travel, we like to visit historic sites and museums. We can personally recommend a visit to the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton. Among other things, it boasts an impressive multi-level model railway that one can operate by simply pushing a button.

Since word has got out about my forthcoming book, I have received numerous invitations to speak on its contents. The most recent was a remote address I delivered to the seventh annual meeting of the Associação Nacional de Juristas Evangélicos (ANAJURE), or the National Association of Evangelical Jurists in Brazil, which you can read about here. I've not yet been approached about a Brazilian edition of Cidadania Sem Ilusões, but I hope it will soon become a reality.

Citizenship Without Illusions is available for pre-order from the publisher and the various online vendors, including the famous Hearts & Minds bookstore in Dallastown, Pennsylvania. I was pleased to receive this endorsement, which I expect will appear on the book cover:

"Citizenship Without Illusions is the best one-stop treatment of political citizenship written by the most significant evangelical political theorist of our day. In it, Koyzis makes a case for political engagement as a divine vocation in which our allegiance to Christ is primary and our allegiance to political parties and platforms is secondary. His ability to turn complex political realities into practical frameworks for action is second to none. Highly recommended."

— Bruce Riley Ashford, senior fellow at the Kirby Laing Centre for Public Theology

As the war in Gaza continues to make headlines, I recently returned to this in my own writings. First, I have posted on my blog Israel and Gaza: nine months later, which includes links to a four-part series I wrote a few months before the 7 October attacks by Hamas. People who are reflexively pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian need better to acquaint themselves with the factors that endlessly complicate the issue, thereby making a solution that much more difficult to effect. Second, Christian Courier published my brief column, Gaza horrors.

Last month, Dr. James Spencer interviewed me for his Thinking Christian podcast, which can be accessed here. I enjoyed my conversation with Spencer. A few weeks later, he interviewed me on my work with the Psalms. I am given to understand that this will be posted next month. When it is, I will link to it from my Genevan Psalter blog.

We have all been following political developments in the United States, especially the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. As the Republican convention in Milwaukee just chose a very young Senator J. D. Vance as the party's vice-presidential candidate, I thought it appropriate to repost something I wrote after reading his best-selling Hillbilly Elegy and shortly after the 6 January storming of the Capitol in Washington, DC: Cultural dysfunction and public policy. Longstanding cultural assumptions definitely play a role in politics.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support for my work. If you have contributed financially on a one-time basis in the past, please consider a regular monthly contribution, as it makes it easier for Global Scholars to set an annual budget, including the modest salary I receive from the organization. GSC's page for giving can be found here. Once you are in the page, scroll down to the heading marked DONATION DETAILS, and then choose one of the options under FUND. Americans may donate through our sister organization in the US.

Canadian donors can donate publicly traded securities (shares or mutual funds) directly to charities without having to pay the capital gains tax. This is a cost-effective way to make a donation that comes with a substantial tax incentive. By donating securities, donors pay no tax on capital gains, receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities, as well as reduce their taxes. Watch this video for more information about this option: Link Charity Canada: Donation of Securities. If interested, please visit the Link Charity Canada Inc. website, and call for details at 1-800-387-8146. Link Charity Canada is a partner organization of Global Scholars Canada, so Link Charity can easily direct funds for my work. Thank you!

Yours in God's service,

David Koyzis, Global Scholar
